Old & New Recipes—-Memory Lane

Couldn’t sleep, tossed and turned until 3:30 and decided to get up and go through old recipes. I have a specific one in mind—a Red Velvet cake I used to make, I thought it would make a nice treat for Valentine’s Day along with heart cookies.

I love recipes— old and new, but I tend to gravitate to the old! I have quite a collection, my Moms, my Mother-in-laws, and mine plus I ALWAYS have my eyes out for old cookbooks when I travel. I also like to look through family and friends collections when I’m visiting! I know I will never make all I have but it just brings me joy to know I have the recipe if the mood so strikes. I often sit down with the intention of perhaps pairing them down but usually they all end up going back in my files. I think ‘Oh yeah, I wanted to try that’ or ‘Mmm that sounds good’. One of my Moms and my, favourite pastimes when we were at her house was going through cookbooks & we even started a journal of recipes to make ‘some day’, so let’s see what my early morning hunt finds.

These recipes take me down memory lane—-old family ones where I can remember the exact occasion or person it was created for, ones that were staples in our family meals, or if someone stopped by unexpectedly, a quick coffee cake to whip up! Trips with my Mom and aunties (and occasionally my cousin Karnie,  which was extra fun!), hotel rooms, Dr. offices, restaurants where I try to recreate one I saw or had, times with my daughters & sons too, you see we all have a love for food!

Every time I go on an adventure, whether big, like my cross country drive from San Francisco to NY—SO FUN!! (that’s another story) or a day jaunt, I’ve always got my eye out for a cute little bakery or coffee shop/cafe where I can check out what they have created & then I snap a picture and savour each bite while trying to figure out each ingredient, then I come home and try to recreate. Well I have intentions of doing that but I have so many I haven’t got to yet. My oldest daughter, Melissa, laughs at my younger, Katie, and I because she says we both look alike when trying to decipher ingredients used 😂😂

I do love the journey, my trouble is I need more people to share with—I love the interaction with people, I enjoy loving people with my baking. It’s such a simple act but it fills my heart with joy! So this Valentines Day why not show your love through baking, cookies, cake, bread...whatever you want to try—I’m sure your recipient will be grateful & their heart full!

P.S. by the end of the night I found my Red Velvet cake recipe, I was going crazy for a few hours😬
